Family awarded compensation after asbestos-related illness

The family of a man who passed away from an asbestos-related illness have been awarded a personal injury compensation settlement.

According to the Hartlepool Mail, Alan Clark, who was 59 years old when he died of mesothelioma - a disorder which affects the inner cell lining of the internal organs but can remain dormant for decades - began legal proceedings prior to his death on behalf of his family and nurse who cared for him.

Mr Clark passed away in the Hartlepool and District Hospice - which cares for terminally ill people in the Durham area - in the summer of 2009, just months after it was confirmed by medical professionals that he had contracted the work-related disease after regularly coming into contact with asbestos.

However, it was reported yesterday (January 26th 2011) that his loved ones have been awarded a financial sum for his ordeal some 18 months after he passed away.
