Widow receives £74k in asbestos compensation

A widow has been awarded £74,000 in compensation following the death of her late husband who passed away due to a work-related illness.

Marjorie Combe, who is 69 years old, has been granted the damages settlement after her spouse George died at the same age in 2009 just four months after being diagnosed with the industrial asbestos-related disease mesothelioma, according to the Shields Gazette.

Mrs Combe told the news source that the illness - which attacks the inner cell lining of the lungs and subsequently causes respiratory issues - was "horrible" as it caused George to be transformed from a "fit, healthy man who was still able to work part-time" to someone in need of "palliative care to help reduce his pain" in a short period of time.

The man contracted the illness from working at John Brown Engineering from 1956 to 1961 and began legal proceedings prior to his death.
