Pump operator could pursue damages after accident at work

A pump operator may opt to pursue a claim for personal injury compensation after an accident at work left him with serious burns and scarring.

John Dodsworth, a man who is 35 years of age, suffered an electric shock when he came into contact with an overhead power line carrying a current of 22,000 volts as he lowered the 12 metre boom attached to a sewer chamber lid while working for James Kennedy and Lumsden & Carroll Construction in County Durham.

As a result, Mr Dodsworth required urgent medical attention and needed several operations - including the removal of part of his skull and skin grafts - which have left permanent scarring after he was airlifted to hospital.

His employers have now admitted liability for the incident, meaning that the employee could be in line for a damages settlement.

This comes after the Health and Safety Executive announced that it is to run a programme over the next few weeks to improve safety at construction sites in the north east.
