TUI UK agrees compensation deal with couple

A travel company has agreed a compensation settlement with a couple who suffered from illness during a holiday in Turkey following legal proceedings that lasted four years.

TUI UK - which owns tour operator Thomson and employs almost 50,000 people across the world - has now awarded damages to Paul and Abi Smith after they contracted a condition due to contaminated water at a four-star resort in Bulgaria in the summer of 2010, the Oxford Mail reports.

Mr Smith now suffers with colitis and irritable bowel syndrome, which left him unable to work for a period of six months due to the "excruciating pain".

As a result, his claim alone is going to be worth an estimated £20,000 to cover his loss of earnings as well as personal discomfort.

"It is an absolute relief that this is all over now and we can move on," he told the news source.

The couple were among 138 holidaymakers who became ill after staying at Obzor's Riu Miramar Hotel.
