Sunderland AFC facing personal injury compensation claim from fan

A football supporter is seeking a personal injury compensation settlement from Sunderland AFC following an accident at the club's training ground.

Niall Quinn, chairman of the sporting institution, revealed on a BBC Radio Newcastle show that a wayward shot from former striker Djibril Cisse - who now plays for Greek side Panathinaikos - struck a fan watching a first team session at its Cleadon Road complex.

Mr Quinn - who represented the Republic of Ireland during his playing career - was answering a query from a listener with regard to whether supporters are allowed to watch the team train.

"We had a supporter who got a bad injury … I'm making fun of it now, but it knocked a supporter out. It was quite serious," he noted.

The official went on to say that the French international forward's effort had led to legal action from the fan concerned.

"That supporter is in the process of suing us right now," he added.
