Back injury could lead to compensation 2488

A back injury suffered during an accident at work could lead to a woman pursuing a claim for compensation.

The unnamed 27-year-old fell a distance of around five metres to the floor when she went through a rooflight on the top of a warehouse owned by Provimi - a firm with around 7,000 employees globally - in Lichfield in April last year.

At the time of the incident, the professional was repairing a gutter on the building for her employer - maintenance contractor Riley & Sons - when she tripped and suffered two fractured vertebrae and extensive bruising.

During an investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), it was found that the boards on the warehouse roof were not protected with guardrails, while safety netting had also not been put in place below the surface.

HSE inspector Lindsay Hope commented: "[Riley & Sons] had no experience of working on fragile roofs and did not take enough precautions to protect workers."
