Cyclists call for road safety improvements 2543

Compensation claims for injuries sustained in road traffic accidents in one area of the north-east are likely to rise unless the local council improvessafety sooner rather than later.

That is if comments made by Peter Harrison, chairman of the Gosforth Road Cycling Club, are anything to go by, as he has told the Evening Chronicle that urgent action is needed to make Haddricksmill Road in Newcastle fit for purpose.

Figures show the pair of mini-roundabouts on the street have been the site of 18 crashes involving vehicles and cycles since 2007, making it statistically one of the most dangerous roads for riders in the UK.

Mr Harrison explained the area is characterised by narrow lanes, poor road markings and blind spots, factors which combine to make it excessively hazardous for cyclists.

"It must be the most dangerous road in Newcastle … It's difficult for cars as well as pedestrians," he stated.
