Work overload 'a big cause of stress'

Giving staff members too much to do is one of the biggest factors behind the onset of stress at work, an expert has said.

According to Dr Rick Norris, chartered psychologist and author of Think Yourself Happy, while there are several major reasons why professionals struggle with mental anxiety, "work overload" tends to be one of the most common.

Dr Norris explained this occurs when workers feel under high levels of pressure because they have "too much to do and not enough time to do it in".

Recently, Monica Seeley, managing director of Mesmo Consultancy, noted that a lot of stress is a direct result of the "work, work, work" culture of the 21st century, which has been worsened by the ubiquitous presence of tablet computers and smartphones.

And Dr Norris went on to say that many individuals also feel anxiety in their jobs due to the feeling they have no input on important business decisions.
