Back injury may lead to compensation

A compensation claim may be forthcoming from a steel worker who suffered a back injury during an accident at work.

The anonymous 50-year-old man sustained muscular injuries and a fractured rib when he was hit by a metal working platform at a factory owned by EDV Reinforcements in Preston in January 2011.

This surface slipped from the forks of a forklift truck while the employee was standing nearby and fell on top of him.

Subsequently, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated the accident and found the platform had not been properly secured to the vehicle and was instead just left resting on the forks.

During a case heard at Preston Magistrates' Court, EDV- a company run by managing director Derek Balchin - admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Richard Clarke of the HSE observed this incident was caused solely by the negligence of the company and could have been easily avoided.
