Severed fingers could lead to damages claim 2590

An accident at work that resulted in an employee having three fingers severed could lead to him launching a compensation claim.

The unnamed 26-year-old professional was hurt while he worked for Keighley-based firm JTS Cushions in June 2011.

At the time of this incident, the man was operating a carding machine in order to fill cushions when he stopped the equipment to clear a blockage, but did not realise the machine's spiked rollers were still moving.

This resulted in two of his fingers being completely cut off and a third being severed just below the knuckle and an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) subsequently established that his employer was unaware that the machine's safety mechanism had broken.

Andrea Jones, inspector at the HSE, commented: "This young man sustained a serious injury to his dominant hand. He has lost three fingers and can no longer take part in some of the routine or enjoyable activities we all take for granted."
