Many small business owners 'unable to spot signs of stress'

More than a quarter of all small business owners are unsure if they can identify and then go about eradicating stress among their staff.

That is according to new research conducted by Bupa, which revealed 26 per cent of such professionals do not feel confident about their ability to spot the signs of mental health problems in their workforce.

At present, issues such as stress at work is costing the UK economy around £26 billion annually through sickness absence, presenteeism and staff turnover.

However, despite this huge impact on the financial performance of firms, many bosses are not currently dealing with mental illness properly, with 41 per cent admitting they never speak to their employees about their physical or mental wellbeing.

Tony Wood, sales and marketing director at Bupa, commented: "The pace at which many small businesses have to work, especially in a struggling economy, means that health can be overlooked in the drive to get things done."
