Worker injured in forklift truck accident may claim

Worker could sue paper mill for lost earnings 2792

A paper mill in Swanley could be open to legal action from one of its employees after he suffered several fractures to his leg and foot following a forklift truck accident.

The employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, was working in the paper mill's warehouse at the time of the accident, removing pallets from a forklift truck.

A colleague who was using a forklift truck to stack the pallets on the right hand side of the same aisle reversed without checking behind him and backed into the worker, trapping him between the machine and the pallet.

The man suffered three breaks in his right ankle and two fractures in his left leg, and has been unable to return to work since the incident as he cannot safely wear steel-toe capped boots that the mill requires employees to wear.

Health & Safety Executive Inspector Guy Widdowson said, "The incident was entirely preventable. Swan Mill Paper Company failed to make sure that there was a safe vehicle and pedestrian system of work in place within their warehouse."
